About Infill (Sand vs. Coal Slag)
The easiest way to explain the difference is to show you. Each of these greens are 3 years old.

There is a huge difference between coal slag and sand infilled products. Simply said, sand infilled greens clump, hold water, accept seeds (thus growing weeds/trees/etc) and mold. Sand infilled greens also are higher maintenance and need to be re-infilled yearly.
We only use coal slag. Coal Slag provides a non-compacting, flexible, natural putting green. It will not clump and once it’s in there, it’s in there. Unlike sand, coal slag will not wash away. There is no re-infilling.
Sand has been used in synthetic putting greens since man first stepped foot on the moon. Well, this is the 21st century! Coal slag is the new choice for infill. Golf has evolved dramatically in the last 40 years. Tiger Woods wouldn’t use the same clubs as Jack Nicholas used, so why use sand infill over coal slag? Sure sand is great for sand traps and bunkers, but NOT to infill your green.
We encourage you to research the different products out there! After you do you’ll see we have the absolute best product on the market!
Here are some myths that our competition uses:
MYTH 1: “Any green that uses infill MUST be maintained every year”
FALSE! Nylon greens use sand as an infill. While using sand requires periodic infilling, Shanachie Greens uses the best polypropylene turf with a COAL SLAG infill. Our greens do not require periodic infilling! Coal slag, although it looks like sand, is NOT SAND. Sand will clump and wash away. Coal slag DOES NOT. Sand will also clump up and mat down and will not give you a true roll. Coal slag DOES NOT clump, will NOT mat down and WILL give you a true roll.
I installed my first polypropylene turf 5 years ago and have never had to maintain the green! I can tell you this as fact because it is MY green in my back yard. I have never had to maintain any green that I have installed and neither have the homeowners.
MYTH 2: Our competitors say their greens do not need infill.
FALSE! I’ve actually seen competitors state their greens do not use infill. But, look through their product specs and you will find that if you intend to chip or hit an approach shot you will need infill! If there is no infill, the fibers will not stand up and will mat down over time. Yet if you want to chip on this product they will tell you that you have to put infill in it to accept the shot. Our competitors use SAND as an infill. When the sand washes away you will need to add infill on a regular basis to keep that putting green rolling true. (As true as it can be on a nylon, sand infilled green that is)
MYTH 3: “Turf with infill must be water rolled periodically”
FALSE! SAND INFILLED greens must be water rolled periodically. With a Shanachie Green, once the infill is in place there will be NO FURTHER WATER ROLLING. Period.
MYTH 4: Memory set or spring set fibers will stand up naturally.
FALSE! If a green is not infilled the fibers will not stand up to the climate in which we live. So picture yourself walking and putting on a green with no infill. What do you think is going to happen to the fibers over a season or two?
MYTH 5: There is no product out there that can claim ‘no-maintenance’
FALSE! Shanachie Greens can claim that because it is true. The only thing you’ll need to do after an install is blow off the leaves in the fall and shovel off the snow in the winter. (Unless, of course, you have a HEATED Shanachie Green!)
You may need to ask your friends to get off it so that you can enjoy it all to yourself!
ASK YOURSELF:
WHY BUY a green that needs to be glued down? (Ask yourself what will happen to a foam or rubber backed green after a couple seasons in Northeast Ohio! Hint: Crumbling, fading, slipping) NOTE: A Shanachie Green will NOT fade, crumble or slip off the base!)
WHY BUY a green that needs to be on a cement pad? (Ask yourself what kind of true roll you will get when your green is glued to a cement pad? Hint: The superball effect?)
WHY BUY a green that uses SAND as infill? (clumps and washes away)
WHY BUY a green that uses SILICA sand? (Known to cause Silicosis)
WHY BUY A SHANACHIE GREEN? Because it’s the best product, best infill, best base! Shanachie Greens is an authorized dealer of All Pro Greens, manufacturer of the best synthetic putting green turf on the market. This turf is tested at the ASTM (American Society of Testing Materials)
