About Turf (Nylon vs. Poly)
Shanachie Greens only works with one product. Manufactured by All Pro Greens, the turf is the highest density polypropylene and is the best on the market. There are ‘chain’ companies out there (or franchises) that sell a variety of different greens at different prices from very cheap to very expensive. In other words, they will sell you whatever price range you are in. Cheap greens (nylon/no double backing/rubber/foam) to more pricey greens (polypropylene). Then they go and infill the greens with sand. Which pretty much put you back to square one because as we’ve already stated, sand infilled greens do not even compare to those filled with coal slag.
With that said, let’s look at the different types of turf out there:
Nylon is made of stiff and rigid fibers which makes it difficult to chip to the green. Many nylon greens use a rubber backing which makes chipping even more difficult because the ball has excessive bounce and will not hold the green well. This padding will also hold water which in turn sets up an environment for mold growth and mildew issues. I can also tell you that I, personally, have replaced many customers’ nylon greens for these precise issues (see photo gallery) Also, with a rubber/foam backing will compress over time due to hot/cold temperatures and repeated walking on the green itself. In Northeast Ohio weather, this is not an issue you need to deal with. Compression is not uniform across the green and will cause bumps and irregularity.
Greens with rubber backing/foam backing should NEVER be placed on a crushed stone base. The rubber will expand and contract with the weather and the result will be a rippled green.
Nylon is also a darker fiber. The darker the color, the more unnatural the green will look. Nylon will also fade. In a year or so, your once green color green will begin to look more blue, or blue-green.
Polypropylene -
Polypropylene greens are more durable than nylon, yet the softest material for a putting green surface, truly mimicking a real grass green. But not all polys are the same!
OUR GREENS (a hybrid of polypropylene and polyethylene)Our greens are the densest turf in the industry, manufactured by All Pro Industries. Our greens have two primary backings which make the turf fiber more stable. Other companies only use one backing. Our turfs second backing (polyuethane) gives even greater strength. Our turf is also double sheared which ensures consistent fiber height on the entire surface of the green, and is double inspected twice before it’s shipped.
All of these factors combined with the coal slag infill (which is second to none) makes Shanachie Greens the absolute best choice out there.
