About our management and history

Shanachie Greens, Inc. is owned and operated by Shane Burke, a long time golfer. In 2004, Shane decided he had to have his own putting green. After calling a couple companies for estimates and having them fail to show up, he put about a years worth of research into which products were the best and decided to install one himself.  For this reason, Shanachie Greens was born.

It was very important to Shane to start his own business and not become part of a franchise.   By establishing a new and independent business we are able to service any and all areas and work with customers wherever they may be located.   NOT being part of a franchise also means there are no franchise fees passed on to our customers!

Providing a superior quality product to everyone who wants to enjoy their own green without hassle. Everyone who installs for Shanachie Greens is also a golfer. Why is this important? Because you need someone who understands the goal that you are trying to accomplish….and not just a landscaper trying to make your yard look pretty. With Shanachie you not only get the aesthetics, you get the experience of a good golfer.

Our Motto

Our trademarked motto: Think Outside The Tee-Box

What the heck is a ‘Shanachie’?

Shanachie (or Seanachai in Gaelic) means “storyteller”. Long before television, cell phones & radio…the Shanachie would travel from town to town telling of legends and events. Their main tradition was that of bringing the news of the land to the towns people. The Shanachie served a vital role in preserving the ancient Irish heritage, passing it from generation to generation. Shanachie is pronounced SHAN (as in “Shannon”) – A (like ‘uh’) – KEY.

About our turf

Ahhhh, the age old question! What is the best turf to use?   Shanachie Greens only works with one brand of turf.   Not because we’re limited (remember, we are NOT a franchise)….but by CHOICE.

OUR GREENS (a hybrid of polypropylene and polyethylene) are the densest turf in the industry.   Our greens have two primary backings which make the turf fiber more stable. Other companies only use one backing.  Our turfs second backing (polyurethane) gives even greater strength.  Our turf is also double sheared which ensures consistent fiber height on the entire surface of the green, and is double inspected twice before it’s shipped.

All of these factors combined with the coal slag infill (which is second to none) makes Shanachie Greens the absolute best choice out there.

When greens first came on the market, most were nylon.   Thankfully now there is an alternative!   Nylon is made of stiff and rigid fibers which makes it difficult to chip to the green.   Many nylon greens use a rubber backing which makes chipping even more difficult because the ball has excessive bounce and will not hold the green well.   This padding will also hold water which in turn sets up an environment for mold growth and mildew issues.

Greens with rubber backing/foam backing should NEVER be placed on a crushed stone base.   The rubber will expand and contract with the weather and the result will be a rippled green.

Nylon is also a darker fiber.  The darker the color, the more unnatural the green will look.   Nylon will fade.   In a year or so, your once green color green will begin to look more blue, or blue-green.

Why we ONLY use coal slag as an infill (never sand!)

There is a huge difference between coal slag and sand infilled products. Simply said, sand infilled greens clump, hold water, accept seeds (thus growing weeds/trees/etc) and mold. Sand infilled greens also are higher maintenance and need to be re-infilled yearly.

We only use coal slag. Coal Slag provides a non-compacting, flexible, natural putting green. It will not clump and once it’s in there, it’s in there. Unlike sand, coal slag will not wash away. There is no re-infilling.

Sand has been used in synthetic putting greens since man first stepped foot on the moon. Well, this is the 21st century! Coal slag is the new choice for infill. Golf has evolved dramatically in the last 40 years. Tiger Woods wouldn’t use the same clubs as Jack Nicholas used, so why use sand infill over coal slag? Sure sand is great for sand traps and bunkers, but NOT to infill your green. More info here

Turf for pets!

Besides tee-boxes, putting greens and golf courses (the usual uses for a Shanachie Green),  our turf is great for pets!  How about a dog run?  How about a dog kennel?   Keeps your pets paws free from mud and grass!  Comfortable and easy to clean! No bugs!

The point is that if you are not a golfer this product will still benefit you!  Installing it as part of a dog run or dog kennel is a wonderful concept and a win-win situation for you AND your pets!   Happy pets make a happy pet owner!
